Alexandra unites against gender-based violence Ward 105 councillor describes the death of Jabulile Nkosi (18) as a tragedy Alex community hold a candle light ceremony to remember Jabulile.

Community-based organisations and local authorities in Alexandra have urged police to work with the community in a fight against the scourge of gender-based violence.

This was after members of interfaith organisations, civic organisations and student movements held a candle-lighting ceremony at the crime scene where the body of an 18-year-old East Bank High School learner, Jabulile Nkosi was found.

Nkosi’s body was found lying along the road not far from the Jukskei River’s Vasco Da Gama Bridge on 6 September this year. Hundreds of community members who were dressed in black walked from the gate of East Bank High School to the crime scene carrying burning candles as a protest to the scourge of gender-based violence.

Ward 105 councillor Tefo Raphadu described Nkosi’s death as a tragedy that needs special attention.”Gender-based violence has no place in our community. It is unfortunate that Ward 105’s community finds itself among places where women are killed by men.
“We condemn this satanic behaviour and we urge all men in our community to come to the party and protect women. We are saying enough is enough.”

The chairperson of Masiphephe Network in Alexandra, Takalane Nemangowe, condemned the incidents and appealed to law enforcement agencies to bring to book all the perpetrators of gender-based violence.
“Masiphephe Network Alexandra condemns the brutal killing of Jabulile in all strongest possible terms. We are deeply saddened by this act of violence,” Nemangowe said.

“We would like to offer our heartfelt and sincere condolences to the Nkosi family and we are committing to ensure that the perpetrators face the mighty hand of the law. We are all for the justice system to act accordingly and with speed.”

Gauteng police spokesperson, Brigadier Mathapelo Pieters said a 25-year-old taxi driver was arrested.”The suspect appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 10 September and the case was postponed by a week for further investigation while the suspect remains in police custody.”
