A global beauty and personal care company has ramped up its recruitment drive for product sellers in Alexandra and other townships as a unique way of giving back and empowering Ekasi communities.
With the growing poverty in Alexandra and its sister townships, Avon stepped in to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 job losses by offering prospective sales representatives who wish to supplement their income an opportunity to open their own online stores and participate in a ‘booming e-commerce industry’.
Addressing a virtual media conference, Mafahle Mareletse, the managing director of Avon Justine South Africa, the Middle East and Turkey, said the company was optimising capacity to accommodate the expected growth from the big drive.
“We have enhanced our digital infrastructure to ensure our new recruits can leverage the ubiquity of online platforms to enhance their earning opportunities and thereby ward off the growing scourge of poverty and destituteness gripping our townships,” Mareletse said.
Instead of the constant handouts, Mareletse said Avon has decided to use the recruitment platform to attract more people into its sales representative ranks as a way of giving back to the communities in a lasting format that also empowers the participants and ensures those individuals can stand on their own feet.
