UPDATE: Alex’s Tsutsumani residents protest over lack of electricity

ALEX – Residents blockaded Lenin Drive, London Road and Roosevelt Street with rocks and burning tyres.

The residents of Tsutsumani, Extensions 7, 9 and 10 took to the streets in the early hours of this morning (1 August) to voice what they described as poor service delivery as they claim not to have had any electricity for months.

Residents blockaded Lenin Drive, London Road and Roosevelt Street with rocks and burning tyres.

A community member explained, “We have been in the dark for months now. We called City Power and reported the matter to the local councillor but nothing has been done. We are tired of empty promises. Almost all of us have reference numbers from City Power,” said the resident.

Ward 105 councillor in the City of Johannesburg, Tefo Raphadu, said the matter was reported to City Power weeks ago.

“We are waiting for City Power to come and install the new electric box that went up in flames next to Alex Mall. The matter was reported to City Power but until now nothing has been done to fix it,” Raphadu said.

He added that the residents’ protest was reasonable because they have endured weeks without electricity, hoping that the utility would fix the problem.
