City of Joburg withdraws proposed fixed prepaid electricity charges

JOBURG – The City of Johannesburg has taken a decision to withdraw the proposed fixed charges of R200 for residential and R400 for commercial prepaid electricity.

The City of Johannesburg announced yesterday, 20 July that following public concerns and suggestions expressed by Johannesburg residents to the proposed tariffs, the City has taken a decision to withdraw the proposed fixed charges of R200 for residential and R400 for commercial prepaid electricity.

This was announced at yesterday’s virtual council meeting which was hosted by MMC for Finance Jolidee Matongo where he also announced that the property tariff rates will be reduced from the proposed 4.9 per cent to 4 per cent.

The water tariff will be reduced from the proposed 8.6 per cent to 6.6 per cent while the electricity tariff will be reduced from the proposed 8.10 per cent to 6.23 per cent.

Matongo also announced that a total of 1.2 billion has been allocated for the formalisation of informal settlements while R50 million has been allocated for the youth=directed development programmes.
