Report GBV cases in your neighbourhoods, urges UJW

ALEX – Union of Jewish Women calls on people to actively report cases of GBV in their neighbourhoods.

The Union of Jewish Women (UJW) in Houghton, which has a number of community outreach and upliftment projects in Alexandra, has called on people to actively report gender-based violence in their neighbourhoods.

In a statement, the union said the outbreak of the Covid-19 global pandemic has impacted hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, not only regarding health issues but socio-economic matters too.

“In the past two weeks in South Africa alone, there has been an unbelievable surge in gender-based violence which we cannot tolerate as a country,” the statement said.

“The UJW stands against this type of violence and appeals to all of you that if you hear something, report it. If you are suspicious, call a helpline and get advice, if you’re a victim of gender-based violence, there is help out there. You’re not alone.”

The Gender-Based Violence Command Centre (GBVCC) operates under the Department of Social Development and has a national 24/7 call centre facility.

The facility employs social workers who are responsible for call-taking and call referrals.

All calls and assistance are done with care, compassion and confidentiality.
