Ipid is still investigating the matter of River Park man found dead in police custody

RIVER PARK – In February this year scores of community members of River Park marched to Sandringham Police Station calling for a speed investigation process of Matshitela's death.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said no arrests have been made in the case of Webster Matshitela of River Park who died in Norwood Police Station holding cells on 27 December last year.

Matshitela was arrested by Sandringham police on 26 December last year.

Ipid acting national spokesperson Sontaga Seisa said the investigation on the case was ongoing and at an advanced stage

In February this year, community members of River Park marched to Sandringham Police Station calling for a speedy investigation process of Matshitela’s death.

River Park Residents Association and community leader Tsietsi Kungoane had accused police of hiding the truth from Matshitela’s family.

“We call for justice in regard to the police brutality which led to the death of Webster Matshitela in December last year. We are calling for the acceleration of the investigation process by Ipid and give back answers to the grieving family,” Kungoane said at the time.
