Mini council to feed less fortunate

JOBURG - The Johannesburg Mini Council is collecting thousands of tinned food cans through a Kids CAN Feed Kids campaign, which aims to provide a meal to disadvantaged children. 80 mini councillors aged 12 and 13, from 40 primary schools in the greater Johannesburg area, make up the council.

The council held a Master Chef challenge where the youngsters prepared some good dishes at the Pick n Pay Good Food Studio, with prizes up for grabs.

Hundreds of cans were collected during the challenge which will be donated to the Just One Bag, an initiative by Jordan van der Walt, which raised over 180 tons of Maize Meal and fed over 1.5 million children. Van der Walt went on to be crowned Lead SA Hero of the year.

Mayor of the council Allandra Galasso said the initiatives they have undertaken, which include collecting 500 tins for a disadvantaged children in Eikenhof south of Johannesburg, have broadened and changed her outlook on life. “We have the most amazing times too,” she added.

The aim of the council is to empower young people and build leadership through community service.
