Maintenance case goes awry pending an investigation

ALEXANDRA – Maintenance officer's order questioned in court.

The Alexandra Magistrate’s Court postponed a case for maintenance pending investigation of an ‘irregular’ reprieve awarded to a respondent.

The order was granted after a woman, who applied for an upward adjustment to a garnish order, approached the court when the respondent stopped paying maintenance for their child. He seemingly stopped the monthly payments of R700 he has been making for seven years with no other material contributions to the child’s upkeep.

The complainant was informed in court that the respondent had relocated from Alex, was unemployed and had been granted the reprieve by a maintenance official. The reprieve was granted without her knowledge and the hearing was postponed to 20 March pending an investigation.
