E-toll blunder ahead of launch

The DA has said the South African National Roads Agency's e-toll billing blunder shows yet again that the system is unworkable and that the agency is hell-bent on forcing the system onto Gauteng commuters, despite widespread resistance and rejection.

According to the Citizen report the roads agency claims it is not charging users yet, but its billing system is sending out statements showing that registered prepaid users have outstanding amounts on their accounts.

The agency has confirmed that there is a known error on the prepaid account notifications that causes the credit amounts to not display properly

“This clearly shows that e-tolls are not ready to roll out as consistently claimed by the Transport Minister and the roads agency itself,” said Neil Campbell, DA Gauteng spokesperson on roads and transport.

According to Campbell, the costly advertising campaign launched by the roads agency provides further evidence that the agency is extremely concerned about public rejection.

“The agency should stop wasting public money trying to fix an unworkable system and heed public opposition to the project and can it in its entirety,” Campbell said.
