Joburg CBD closes roads to usher in 2020

JOBURG – Expect large road closures as the City welcomes in 2020 at the NYE party.


New Year’s Eve celebrations in the CBD will see multiple roads closed off to welcome in 2020.

The roads will be cordoned off to traffic in preparation for the NYE countdown at Mary Fitzgerald Square as the City of Johannesburg hosts a New Year’s Eve extravaganza.

According to the the City of Joburg and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), multiple roads around Mary Fitzgerald Square and Newtown Park precinct in Newtown will be closed to traffic on Tuesday to Wednesday,  has confirmed.

Full road closures: 6am on Tuesday to 6am on Wednesday 

• Miriam Makeba Street and Rahima Moosa (Jeppe Street)
• Miriam Makeba Street and Lilian Ngoyi Street also known as Bree Street.
• Henry Nxumalo Street and Rahima Moosa also known as Jeppe Street.
• Henry Nxumalo Street and Lilian Ngoyi Street also known as Bree Street.

Full road closures: 12pm on Tuesday to 6am on Wednesday 

• Miriam Makeba Street and Gwigwi Mrewi Street.
• Miriam Makeba Street and Helen Joseph Street (President Street)
• Henry Nxumalo Street and Barney Simon Street.
• Henry Nxumalo Street and Gwigwi Mrewi Street.
• Henry Nxumalo Street and Rahima Moosa also known as Jeppe Street.
• Henry Nxumalo Street under the M1 flyover between Lilian Ngoyi Street also known as Bree and Rahima Moosa also known as
Jeppe Street and Wolhuther Street also known as Margaret Mcingana.
• Quinn Street and Rahima Moosa also known as Jeppe Street.
• Quinn Street and Lilian Ngoyi Street also known as Bree Street.
• Gerald Sekoto Street and Lilian Ngoyi Street also known as Bree Street.
• Gerald Sekoto Street and Rahima Moosa also known as Jeppe Street.

NYE route diversions M1 North and M1 South – on double-decker section.

• Sections of the M1 North and M1 South will be affected from 9pm until 11pm
• Full road closures on M1 North and M1 South will be from 11pm until 1am on New Year’s Day and traffic will be diverted accordingly.
• Both highways will be fully operational by 1am on 1 January 2020.

Vehicles coming from M1 North:

• Vehicles coming from M1 North going South will be diverted to Smit Street.
• They can then turn right into Biccard Street, which will change to Simmonds Street.
• At the corner of Simmonds and Village, those going east will slide left to join M2 East.
• Those going to the South will proceed straight and turn right at Trump Street and then left at West Street to join the M2 west.

Vehicles coming from M1 South and Main Reef Road:

• Vehicles coming from M1 South and Main Reef Road will be diverted to Joe Slovo Drive.

“Safety and security is our main concern as the City of Joburg. Security will be tight and there will be strong police visibility and crime prevention by SAPS, JMPD and other law enforcement agencies,” said the City.

This is the City’s year-end event focusing on building social cohesion.

NYE revellers attending the event are advised that there will be parking at Newtown Junction, access will be at corner Miriam Makeba and Carr Streets.

No ticket, no entry.

No alcohol, fireworks, weapons, cooler boxes and hubbly bubbly pipes will be allowed into the venue. The event is only open to persons aged 18 or older.
