The Alexandra U16 women’s football team has done it again.

They have been crowned champions of the Mayoral Cup after defeating all but one of their opponents in a tournament at the Nike Stadium in Pimville, Soweto.

The team beat arch rivals, Soweto 7-0, and drew 0-0 against Deep South. In the semi-finals they played Orange Farm and walloped them 9-1, and then faced Rand Central in the final, beating them 2-0 to lift the cup.

The boys U16 team were the finalists and runner’s up in the competition. The boys played preliminary games against Rand Central, Orange Farm, Jowest and won all three games with the same 2-0 score line. In the semi-final they beat Soweto, 1-0, but lost the final 2-1 to Eldos.

Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association’s technical director Mxolisi Mngomezulu said, “It was a great success for Alex football to have both boys and girls in the finals. This is also a true reflection of the amount of dedication on the part of our local coaches in the ongoing development of young players.”

He was also full of praise for the visionary leadership of the association. “It is this kind of leadership that has seen us conquer in this tournament, hot on the heels of another victory at the Safa Johannesburg inter local football associations tournament in Mayfair on 28 September. The association plays an integral role in support of our local brand. We will always thrive to put Alex on the football map with distinction,” he added.
