Watch out for balaclava attacker

ALEXANDRA – Copycat balaclava assailant on the prowl

Alex residents were advised to be vigilant after a balaclava-clad assailant allegedly robbed and raped a woman in the area.

The incident is reminiscent of two men dressed similarly who were arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment several years ago after a spate of attacks, rapes of several women, assault of their partners and generally terrorising the township. Alex Police Station spokesperson Captain Stephen Malatji said the 24-year-old victim was walking alone from a club at Alex Mall in the early morning of 23 November when the assailant attacked her. “He took her cell phone and cash and raped her,” Malatji said urging residents to desist from risking their lives by walking home late at night.

He said while the incident could be a copycat of the notorious balaclava pair, several arrests were made recently of similar attacks by lone assailants. “One of them suffered mob justice after residents caught and beat him up before handing him over to the police.”

He added that other attackers may have knowledge of their victims’ surroundings as they seemed to access their homes without signs of breaking in. He advised residents to heighten their vigilance and ensure that their homes are locked and secured at all times.
