City network system almost fully restored after cyber attack

JOBURG – The City of Joburg has experienced a few challenges on their online services since their networks were breached a few weeks ago.

The City of Johannesburg suffered a computer network system breach two weeks ago.

Customers could not access online services such as the City’s website and e-services, and the billing centre and call centre were compromised.

MMC for Finance, councillor Funzela Ngobeni said their IT department undertook rigorous work to get to the bottom of the cyber attack. “I can confidently state that our systems have now been fully restored and it will soon be business as usual for the City of Johannesburg,” he said.

Ngobeni noted that the City did, however, have problems on 5 November with the distribution of statements due to a contractual dispute between the City and its Internet Service Provider (ISP), Dimension Data, leading to the suspension of all its network-dependent applications.

“The City has now reached a settlement with the ISP and all services have been restored, except the City’s call centre, which will take slightly longer due to the system upgrading process.”

Ngobeni believed the services would be up and running again by the end of the week.

The City has apologised for the inconvenience caused to all customers who may have been affected by the incident.

The City’s IT department is working on implementing its cybersecurity policy, which was approved in September this year.

He concluded that the City would be training staff on new interventions that would protect the City from future infiltrations of its network.
