Scores of people participate in this year’s Reverend Sam Buti Annual Fun Walk

ALEXANDRA – This year's walk was attended by more than 500 people including dozens of Comrade Marathon runners from a local runners club, Run Alex.

Scores of people from all parts of Johannesburg converged on the premises of Uniting Reform Church of South Africa in Alexandra on 14 September to participate in the fourth Reverend Sam Buti Annual Fun walk.

This year’s walk was attended by more than 500 people including dozens of Comrade Marathon runners from a local runners club, Run Alex.

Speaking to Alex News on the side-lines of the event that started on 5th Avenue and ended at Altrec Sports Complex in East Bank, Reverend Nicholas Mashiane said,

“This event gives us an opportunity not as a church but the entire community of Alexandra and the country to reflect on the contributions of a preacher that refused to see people suffering in Alexandra.

“We don’t only raise funds to help the poor but also create a platform to teach our community, especially the younger generations, about the contributions of Ntate Buti in the liberation of our country.”

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder and chairperson of the Maimane Alexandra Development Foundation, Maimane Phiri who participated in the walk, appealed to the residents of Alexandra to take part in the event that seeks to celebrate the lives of local heroes who sacrificed their comfort to see Alexandra a better place to live in.

“Ntate Buti was a preacher, I could say, man of God, who had the comfort of the church and who needed not put himself in any compromising situation. However, Ntate Buti stood firm against inequality and the apartheid regime. He refused to hide behind the comfort of being a reverend and fought for Alexandra.”
