Learners from Liberty College, most of whom come from Alexandra, are working tirelessly to prepare for this year’s The Star High School Quiz national competition following their phenomenal results in regional competition.
The school took a very close runner-up position losing to Veritas College in a regional competition held at the IIE Varsity College in Midrand on Saturday, 31 August.
However, the school secured a place in the national finals to be held at the IIE Varsity College in Sandton on Thursday, 19 September.
From the regional competition, each learner walked away with a tablet, certificate and R 1000 cash while the teachers received R1 000 and winning the school an amount of R10 000.
The school teacher who is also coaching the learners, Xolani Ndlovu said this year, they chose the highly talented team which is committed and have strong teamwork skills.
“We are working very hard and we hope that this year we will be crowned national champions,” she said.
The quiz was based on content published by The Star newspaper while for the national competition the learners will be quizzed on the content drawn from IOL websites.
The quiz covers different topics including politics, entertainment, current affairs, business, and sport.
“The competition has motivated learners not only from this school but also from the neighbouring schools,” Ndlovu added.
A Grade 10 learner, Thembekile Ndlovu, said their victory from the regional competition had taught her that hard work pays off. “It has always been our dream to compete with the big guns and finally succeed.”
Another Grade 10 learner who is part of the school’s team competing in the quiz, Aviwe Mseyisi, said they meet on weekends and study as a group. “Our coaches help us with the questions which may be possibly asked. We do our own quiz as we prepare for the national rounds.”
The school principal, Dumisani Hadebe, indicated that their victory means a lot to them as an institution of learning and teaching. ” We attracted the attention of those who didn’t even know us.”
He praised the teachers and the learners for securing a position in the final. “The victory means a lot to the participants.
“It broadens their knowledge, boost their confidence and instill the culture of reading and studying.”
