Herman Mashaba visits Alexandra to clean local park in A Re Sebetseng cleaning campaign

ALEXANDRA – Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba joins residents of Alexandra to clean the local park and Jukskei River.

The Mayor of the City of Johannesburg councillor Herman Mashaba rolled up his sleeves and joined forces with residents of Alexandra to clean up the local park and Jukskei River on 17 August this year.

Mashaba, who was accompanied by MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services councillor Nico De Jager, local councillors and staff members of the city, embarked in this month’s A Re Sebetseng Cleaning project held in East Bank.

Mashaba said he was pleased with the results of the two-year-old project in different neighbourhoods of the city.

“We launched A Re Sebetseng Project in 2017 after I visited Kigali in Rwanda, to encourage residents of our city to take care of the environment they live in. I am very pleased with the results of the project in different parts of the city, though it has been difficult for us to get some communities involved in it. It’s unfortunate that in some wards councillors are at a forefront of resistance,” he said.

The mayor said the City of Johannesburg has been invited to come and share its experiences and lessons learned through A Re Sebetseng Project with other global cities in a conference that will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark in October this year.

He urged residents and community members of Alexandra to take part in ensuring that the environment they live in was clean at all times.
