Alex FM new board receives thumbs up from the station listene

ALEXANDRA– The issues about inconsistency when it comes to payments of their salaries topped their concerns.

The community members and listeners of Alex FM have praised the new board of directors of the community broadcaster for turning things around at the station.

The community radio had been in the news last year after stakeholders failed to elect a new board. In July last year, staff members of the station went to the Gauteng South High Court after the station failed to pay their salaries for three consecutive months.

Unpacking the state of the station during a meeting with listeners, chairperson of the new board Isaac Mangena said the station was on the right track to recovery and the morale among staff members had improved.

“When we came into office late last year, we promised to turn things around at the station and restore it back to serving the community to which it belongs. Some of the mandate we were given by the community was to stabilise finances of the station, secure a licence with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa, improve morale of the staff and deal with issues of governance.”

Mangena said the staff had expressed concerns about the morale at the station following a year that was marred by court battles and they charged the management of the station to ensure that the confidence was restored.

“The issues about inconsistency when it came to payments of their salaries topped their concerns. Their contracts were also an issue. We also directed the station manager to ensure the staff receives letters of confirmation that they are working at Alex FM. But I can safely say the morale at the station has improved and there is hope.”

One of the listeners who attended the meeting Justice Matlala praised the new board for what he described as positive change in the right direction after years of uncertainty at the station.
