Bag Factory art veteran’s 40 year-long career comes to an end

JOBURG – South African art legend, Davido Koloane, passes away at 81.

The South African art community was left rattled following the passing of acclaimed artist, David Koloane. It was reported that Koloane died at his home on 30 June.

The Alexandra-born painter was a much-admired artist, educator, writer, curator and facilitator. Koloane was considered a forerunner in the development of the black art community in South Africa and was instrumental in the establishment of The Bag Factory.

President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed heartfelt condolences to the family and friends the veteran artist.

“A giant in the arts has fallen; one who has contributed immensely to the arts in South Africa as an activist, a mentor to many and a pioneer for the development of the black art community,” Ramaphosa said.

Koloane’s work has been shown in South Africa, Botswana, France, the United States, the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe. His work focuses on the complexities of the South African urban landscape by commonly depicting township scenes, dogs, cityscapes and jazz music.
