City of Joburg awards artisan certificates to 97 graduates

JOHANNESBURG – MMC for Economic Development Leah Knott hands over certificates to 97 graduates.

The City of Joburg’s Department of Economic Development awarded 97 young people certificates after completing a 12-week, short skills artisan-training programme.

The graduates were equipped with various skills, including carpentry, roof laying, plumbing, plastering and other skills related to the renewable energy sector.

The MMC for Economic Development Leah Knott said the programme will help the City achieve its 5 per cent economic growth target by 2021 and reduction of unemployment.

She encouraged young people to remain in the field as there is a great demand for artisans.

“I hope that all of you will stay with this programme because there are many possibilities that will open up for you once you have completed your apprenticeship. We have a great shortage of artisans in South African and in Johannesburg, particularly in the construction and engineering sectors.”

She added that the intention of the City is to continue with the programme to a full apprenticeship which can take up to three years.

“We have been working hard to transform Johannesburg from a place of despair to one characterised by optimism and hope. We believe that when Johannesburg works, South Africa works. The DA-led administration in the City of Joburg has committed itself to restore hope among residents.”

One of the graduates, Martha Sekgobela from Alexandra, thanked the City for reviving her hope of a better life. “I am grateful for this opportunity, I want to see myself working for one of the big construction companies in the near future and eventually starting my own construction company.  The dream is about to become a reality.”
