Dysfunctional Alex football on the brink of collapse, says president Maisha Molepo

ALEXANDRA – ANLFA president Maisha Molepo warns of a possible collapse of the local football body following the emergence of faction and failure to hold its AGM last month.

The president of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (Anfla), Maisha Molepo, has called on football veterans in the township to ‘stand up and step in’ to save the dysfunctional football body from collapse.

Addressing the launch of the Alex Veterans Football Association (AVFA) in a boardroom at the Alexandra Stadium on 23 June, Molepo has called on the veterans in a similar vein to the ANC to save the Anfla from grinding itself to total collapse. “I am banking on you, as the elders of this football body that happens to be the oldest football association in the country, to step in and save this body from itself.

“We have insurmountable divisions within the association such that if you don’t come in and help us find an amicable understanding to our problems, the Anfla will collapse.”

Molepo pointed out that the Anfla was due to hold its annual general meeting last month (May) as per requirement under its constitution but that the meeting collapsed as none of the members and the current executive of the Anfla turned up.

“You can see for yourselves, most of them are not here to witness this launch. That alone speaks volumes. They also failed to attend the final league game which was to decide the team to be promoted to the SAB League. I had to use our junior league’s trophy and medals for those awards as no one wanted to hand them over.

“There is a lot of infighting in the association, and all this came by soon after our elections in 2017. The leaders we elected there have destroyed the spirit of football in the Anfla. If, as Maisha, I am the stumbling block and culprit of the dysfunctional state, call me to order.

“I had wanted to take the matter around the dysfunctional state of the Anfla to the mother body [Safa] with a view to disband it but after a second thought, I said let me give it the opportunity to self-correct, hence I have also taken this route to ask you to stand up and step in to try and solve the problems.”

Among the veterans were the past presidents such as Moss Selolo from whom Molepo took over and Simon Selepe who came before Selolo, including veteran soccer stars and referees and other administrative officials of the Anfla, then known as Afa for the Alexandra Football Association.
