EFF calls on law enforcement agencies to zoom into the criminal character of the Alex Shutdown Movement

ALEXANDRA – The EFF in the Johannesburg region welcome the mayor's courageous commitment to rebuild Silvertown houses.

The EFF is disturbed by the language used by the movement, which they described as devoid of class consciousness and grassroots orientation.

This was after the leaders of the Total Shutdown Movement convened a community meeting in Sankopano Community Hall, where residents agreed to embark on mass action against the rebuilding of illegal houses that were demolished on 31 May this year by the City in Maponyane Village.

In a statement released on 7 June by the chairperson of the Johannesburg region Musa Novela, the party said it was disturbed by what it described as the provocative language used by the leadership of Alexandra Total Shutdown Movement during its meeting with the community on 5 June.

“We furthermore strongly condemn the violent posture that this gangster movement has now adopted and call on all our ground forces in Alexandra to report to Silvertown daily in defence of the community and its historical displacement struggles,” the statement said.

The party said it welcomes Herman Mashaba’s courageous commitment to rebuild Silvertown and calls on the City to immediately deploy a rapid response team made up of relevant departments and municipal entities to work on a coordinated strategy to develop Alexandra and other neglected settlements.
