Services continue at PikitUp despite disruptions

JOHANNESBURG – The matter was resolved and employees returned to work.

Services have been restored at PikitUp in Marlboro after employees held a brief strike this morning (15 May).

The former Jozi@Work and 2010 contract workers are part of the 1 400 that was insourced by the City last year. According to spokesperson of PikitUp Muzi Mkhwanazi, the employees were demanding to work four-days a week instead of three. Mkhwanazi said the workers also wanted PikitUp to stop using Expanded Public Works workers from working on the fourth day.

“The strike was illegal and employees could have faced disciplinary action. The matter was quickly resolved and employees have returned to work,” said Mkhwanazi.

Meanwhile, residents of Zondi in Soweto protested outside the local depot, blocked the entrance and prevented PikitUp trucks from leaving the site. The protesters were allegedly demanding employment. “Management is expected to have discussions with the protesters soon to resolve the matter,” added Mkhwanazi.
