Murder suspect abandons bail

ALEXANDRA – Girlfriend at centre of a murder case

An alleged murder suspect declined to apply for bail in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court – presumably for his own personal safety.

Senzo Matokazi (31), who remains in custody pending further investigation, is charged with the murder of man on 13th Avenue, Alex early morning on 3 December last year. He allegedly stabbed to death one of two men who intervened as he was beating his girlfriend. In his defence, the accused claimed to have gone to bed at his home on the same street.

When he awoke at midnight, the girlfriend who had visited him was absent. He searched for her at clubs and taverns to not avail, only to find her on his return, next to the home with a friend. Aggrieved, he slapped her while accusing her of being on the street late at night. The deceased and a companion seemingly appeared on the scene and are said to have intervened. One of them is said to have hit him on the head with an unspecified object. As he fell, he saw a knife on the ground which he picked up and used to stab the deceased.

Still in a dizzy state, he fled the scene to his place where he went onto the roof. Later, he heard someone shouting that people were looking for him. This forced him to seek refuge somewhere for the night.

In the morning, he handed himself over at the Alexandra Police Station and the police took him to his place which they found ransacked. The girlfriend’s evidence differed with her claiming that when he took a nap, she got bored and with a friend joined two males in a vehicle and went to a tavern in Far East Bank.

They returned to the accused’s place at about 9.30 pm. The accused was furious and accused her and slapped her forcing her to flee as he pulled out an unidentified object from his side. As he chased her, she saw the deceased following from behind them presumably to stop the accused. The accused seemingly turned around and stabbed the deceased in the chest. He fell to the ground and died.
