Volkswagen Amarok heads for the Canyon

Joining the Dark Label added in December last year, the Canyon slots-in below the flagship Extreme and also undercuts the Highline Plus by R2 700, despite adding items, based on details obtained from the automaker’s website, such as 17-inch Aragua alloy wheels, extended wheel arches with only the fronts, bizarrely, being finished in black plastic, black sports bar and running side steps, special Canyon badging at the base of the front doors and on the tailgate, and a choice of four colours; Candy White, Deep Black Pearlescent, Indium Grey Metallic, Reflex Silver Metallic and Mojawe Beige Metallic.

Inside, the sole changes consists out of orange stitching on the seats finished in bespoke Canyon trim and a black roofliner, with notable equipment being the 6.5-inch Composition Media infotainment system with six-speaker sound system, climatronic air-conditioning, front and rear Park Distance Control with a reverse camera, bi-xenon headlights and partly chromed finished folding and heated electric mirrors.

Optional is the so-called Winter Package that adds heated front seats and wiper nozzles (R5 044), and the Discovery Media infotainment system made up of a 9.2-inch display complete with embedded satellite navigation (R20 579).

Up front, the Canyon swaps the Dark Label’s 2.0 BiTDI engine for the 3.0 TDI V6 that punches out 165 kW and 550 N.m of torque, teamed to the eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox with permanent 4Motion all-wheel-drive. As with the rest of the V6 range, fuel consumption is rated at 9.0 L/100 km.

Like the rest of the Amarok line-up, the Canyon comes as standard with a three year/100 000km warranty and a five year/90 000km service plan.
