New centre at Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital boosts sports medicine

The Wanderers Sports Medical Centre in Illovo, in association with Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital and its Orthopaedic and Oncology Centre, will establish a new satellite multidisciplinary sports medical centre based at the hospital.

The first of its kind in Gauteng, the new facilities will also include a gymnasium and a hyperbaric oxygen chamber together with a full support team and sports physician. The centre will also boast a multidisciplinary sports medical team offering rehabilitation, high-performance sports conditioning across all sports and a functional gym.

“My vision at Wanderers Sports Medical Centre was to always provide holistic care and we have done this with 12 specialist practitioners and a fully functional gym, supplied by Origin Fitness SA, over the last three years. The association with Busamed Modderfontein, creates an even greater platform for holistic care,” said Craig Govender, director at the Wanderers Sports Medical Centre.

The venture is being spearheaded by Govender who is the current head physiotherapist for Cricket South Africa. The new centre looks to provide medical screening by sports physicians, musculoskeletal assessments and treatment by physiotherapists, trainers and biokineticists will provide strengthening and conditioning exercises, visual assessments will be done by optometrists, and nutritional education will be provided by dieticians.

The new centre which is set to open its doors later in April will be able to create networks for the new wave of specialist orthopaedic surgeons and radiology services available in Johannesburg.
