Hawks members remanded in custody

JOHANNESBURG – Hawks members to appear in court for alleged corruption, extortion, intimidation, and defeating the ends.


Three Hawks members have been remanded in custody following their brief appearance in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.

The three were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation and Crime Intelligence on 5 April for alleged corruption, extortion, intimidation, and defeating the ends of justice.

According to a statement from the police, Captain Thembani Luyanda Mnonopi (55), Captain Mydarling Hlanganai Ndaba (39), and Warrant Officer Zanele Constance Shabane (49), were arrested after investigations revealed that in January this year they allegedly intimidated and extorted more than R100 000 in foreign and local currency from a Midrand businessman.

The trio reportedly threatened to have his business shut down for operating with invalid documents and also for being in the country illegally.  They are expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on the 10 April where their bail application will be heard.
