Joburg’s Disaster Management Centre a finalist for UN award

JOBURG – The disaster management centre will make its risk deduction presentation in Geneva in May.

Following months of nail-biting selection and vetting process by charity organisation Oxfam South Africa, the City of Johannesburg Disaster Management Centre has been invited to make a presentation of its disaster programme at the Global Disaster Risk Reduction(DRR) platform in Geneva Switzerland in May.

The City of Johannesburg said in a statement that the City’s disaster centre’s programme was selected as one of the few international finalists for the United Nations Office for DRR.

The centre was informed that they were the selected choice by Oxfam South Africa as a representative.

Oxfam International called on all its branches worldwide to submit their successfully implemented local-authority initiatives of good practices in the areas that are prone to disaster and their plans of risk reduction. The risks range from fires, flooding, droughts and areas prone to sinkhole formations.

The centre will present its programme in Geneva in May for final selection.
