Alexandra High School principal lauds Salict Projects in the school

ALEXANDRA – The project aims to enable the learners to improve the standard of performance to help them achieve good marks.

The principal of Alexandra High School Zoleka Lebelo has lauded the efforts and good work done by a local non-profit organisation South African Life Improvement Community Trust (Salict).

Salict was formed a few years ago by a group of retired academics from different fields to help struggling local schoolchildren with extra classes. Lebelo said the project was yielding fruits for Grade 8 and 9 learners.

The organisation recently hosted an awards ceremony at the school to recognise and award trophies to the best performing learners in the school.

According to the retired accountant, and coordinator of the project who teaches English at the school, Jay Ramdass, the objective of the project was to enable the learners to improve the standard of performance so they can achieve good marks. “Our aim as the organisation is not only to teach but also help these youngsters become great leaders in society. With all the skills they acquire in their respective classes, we want them to share it with their peers and their families.”

He added that the organisation provides free meals for learners who attend Saturday classes.

“Our organisation’s teachers are highly qualified academics who have occupied the leadership position in different private and public institutions. They are teaching from practical experience,” said Ramdass.

Last year’s Grade 9 learners and recipients of the awards Sbahle Sibisi, Hlanganini Ndlovu and Zinhle Mkhinza said the project has helped them improve and achieve higher marks in different subjects after struggling for years.

“In the first quarter I was in level 3 of EMS but with the help of the Salict Project, I managed to get to level 6 by the end of 2018 in the second quarter. I progressed to level 4 and to level 6 in the last two quarters. The classes are very useful and I can attest to that,” said Zinhle.
