Days of imaginary experiments are over for science learners at East Bank High School

ALEXANDRA– The knowledge that we will attain through observing and practical experiment in this lab will go a long way to help us understand science.

The days of imaginary practical experiments for East Bank High School‘s physical and natural science learners has come to an end after the school received a new fully-equipped science laboratory.

This was after non-profit organisation Afrika Tikkun in partnership with Societe General de Surveillance (SGS), an inspection, verification, testing and certification company, handed over a new science laboratory to the school.

Viviane Lokale, strategic transformation manager at SGS said reaching out to local communities as an organisation was one of their priorities. “As an organisation that does business in the community, it is our duty and responsibility to reach out to the people and lend a helping hand where it’s needed. We are not just giving back but investing to the future of our country,” said Lokale.

DIMAKATSO NDALA: This is indeed a breakthrough for us science students. The laboratory will help us understand what we learn from the books.

Addressing scores of people who came to witness the historic handover of the lab, Grade 9 physical science teacher Sipho Mofokeng said the laboratory will make things easier for both learners and teachers at the school.

“As science educators, we are so happy and quite aware of the importance and significance of the science lab in the school. We’ve been longing and craving for this lab as it will allow students to directly interact with the gathered data,” said Mofokeng.

THABISO MOKOENA: I am looking forward to a better and improved performance in science and natural science. The lab will help us understand theory better through experiments.

“Our learners will for the first time taste a first-hand learning experience by performing experiments on their own. It will make teaching and learning easier for both learners and teachers. This is indeed a special gift to us.”

Grade 12 physical science learner at the school Mpho Sisimogang said the laboratory will help them understand science beyond theory and have practical touch in every learning experiment.

“Effective science learning involve practical experiment which goes beyond theory and book story. The knowledge that we will attain through observing and practical experiment in this lab will go a long way to help us understand science,” said Mpho.
