Discovery puts spotlight on learner safety

ALEXANDRA – Ikage hosts Discovery's safety message.

The security of learners has been elevated to the same level of prominence as their actual learning.

This was said by the company, Discovery Insure at a pilot event which highlighted the dangers faced by children going to and from school and generally. The event was held at Ikage Primary School after a similar drive at Emfundisweni Primary School where 1 000 reflective bags, caps, beanies, water bottles and a booklet on road safety tips under the education safety theme ‘See Me’ were distributed at each school. The antics of mascots, Mr Safety and Ms Caution added to the children’s appeal together with motivation and entertainment event ambassador and U17 Girls National Soccer team coach Simphiwe ‘Shorty’ Dludlu.

“Many kids are killed in road-related accidents daily through lack of knowledge and awareness on how, where and when to cross the roads,” Dludlu said at the school which borders with the main Vincent Tshabalala Road.

She commended the donation and message saying it will reduce the children’s vulnerability. “They will also compliment the scholar patrol programme and make the children ambassadors to others as part of an ongoing awareness drive that will be rolled out nationally if the pilot proves successful.”

The company CEO Anton Ossip said the initiative was prompted by the company’s commitment to the safety particularly of school children who are the country’s future. “You are the company’s prospective employees if you are assisted with knowledge and awareness on how to remain alive when crossing roads,” he said.

School principal Nkosinathi Msweni commended the partnership saying it was required in Alex schools. “We need to secure the children as ‘workers of the mind’ by guaranteeing their safety by making them visible from all motorists.

“The bags which are a valuable asset will add uniformity to the children and secure their pens and others learning items which are lost when they use torn and insecure bag. They will be their carriers of knowledge and it is also an early Valentine’s present to them.”
