Taxi owner nabbed with 16 passports

ALEXANDRA – Passport-loaded taxi owner nabbed for attempted R2 000 bribe of police officers.

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court remanded a man in custody pending further investigation for bribery of Joburg Metro Police officers.

The 27-year-old accused who claimed to be the owner of a Mercedez Benz Sprinter taxi was arrested early this year by the officers on routine patrol who stopped the vehicle with passengers and coming from Beit Bridge.

When the officers issued the driver a ticket for a broken windscreen and a tail light, the accused intervened and offered them a R2 000 bribe which they declined and opened a charge against him.

This prompted the officers to search everyone but the accused refused and he was arrested. His bag was then searched and found to contain 16 passports and R2 000 which he failed to account for. He was detained at Bramley Police Station awaiting the court hearing where he was further remanded in custody.

The passports and the cash are part of the evidence against him.
