School boy sentenced for robbery

ALEXANDRA – Grade 10 learner sentenced for December holiday robbery.

A 19-year-old boy from Alexandra was sentenced by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to seven years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating sentences.

Mpilo Maseko had just completed Grade 9 at an undisclosed school when he committed the crime at about 10am on 31 December last year. He and an accomplice, who is at large, robbed a 62-year-old homeowner in Morningside of a gun and a vehicle worth R30 000.

The victim heard a bang on the front door, took out his gun and went to check. He was confronted by the two who were already inside the house. The gun jammed when he tried to shoot at them and they wrestled it off the homeowner and turned it on him. It wasn’t specified if they took other items from the home beside the gun and the vehicle which they drove away.

A robbery alert was activated after the incident. Twenty days later, police on the lookout, spotted the vehicle being driven in Alexandra and stopped it. Maseko and someone who was driving were the only occupants and when asked, Maseko claimed the vehicle was his.

He was arrested and the driver set free. The vehicle was returned to the owner.
