Joburg East, in top three best performers in 2018 matric

ALEXANDRA – Alex schools, district's performance raises eyebrows.

Alexandra’s 2018 matric learners contributed to the Joburg East District’s improved standing in the provincial and national results.

The district notched up the second best position from 15 districts in Gauteng province, coming second to Tswane South, and attained third best position nationally after the leader, Fezile Dabi, Free State and runner-up Tswana South also in Gauteng.

District director Mnyamezeli Ndevu said, “It derives from the pupils’ tenacity, hard work and self-belief.

“The improved overall passes by the five township-based schools and their other counterparts also helped to dispel a long-standing myth and perception of perennial failures to a position of respect and awe that they too can attain the normative 100 per cent which is a given in better resourced and private schools.”

Of the five, KwaBhekilanga achieved 92.34 per cent, Realogile attained 91 per cent, East Bank notched up 89.72 per cent, Alexandra High got 85.28 per cent and Minerva earned 80.90 per cent.

“It shows that resources aren’t the only determinants of good performance but also, determination, dedication and passion,” Ndevu said.

Also, he complimented the involvement of all education stakeholders.

“I have insisted on the importance of teamwork at the district, schools, school governing body and parents in all aspects of children’s education. “This includes work of juniors at the schools.

“With their hearts in the right place coupled with determination and honesty in their work, positive results are guaranteed.”

Ndevu commended the department of education and the government’s policy of resourcing schools in poor locations.

“The free books, feeding schemes and after-school support are a huge impetus to children who are hungry to improve their circumstances through good and quality education.

“Poverty should never be a determinant of one’s station in life if and when support is availed.”
