#AlexFire: More than 600 residents require assistance after fire
ALEX - MMC for Housing Meshack Van WyK visits fire victims.
Residents of Greenville Informal Settlement in London Road, Alexandra have started rebuilding their shacks after a fire destroyed a number of houses on 6 December.
According to non-profit organisation Gift of the Givers, more than 600 people have come for assistance.
MMC for Housing Meshack van Wyk is also at the scene and engaged with city officials on the way forward at a nearby school.
Khwezi Masondo, (45) a resident who lost everything, explained that he was at work when the fire started and he was totally devastated, ” I lost everything even my identity document, I don’t know where to go from here…”
Nana Radebe, Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson said the disaster management team was currently on site to determine the extent of the damage.
No deaths or injuries have been reported.
The man allegedly responsible for causing the fire is currently in police custody at a hospital after he was beaten by angry residents.
Police are yet to comment about the incident.
