You can bet on good coaching

JOBURG -– Betway, the online sports betting company, is rolling out soccer training programmes known as 'coaching the coaches' in an effort to improve grassroots football.

Alex coaches can look forward to being upskilled when sports betting company Betway makes its rounds in the iconic township as it moves around communities as part of its grassroots football development initiative.

Speaking in an interview with Alex News, Mark Rowles, head of marketing for the UK headquartered company, Betway, which has established a branch in Melrose Arch, said, “We’re committed to improving grassroots football in this country as we believe this is where development begins. If a good foundation is laid in the grassroots level then the top echelons of football will thrive as there will be a steady flow of talent to fill the gaps and openings created by retirees.”

Their pilot coaches training programme was held recently in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria. Rowles said it was a success and this spurred them on and decided to roll it out to various communities in the country.

“We’re passionate about sport and soccer in particular and this is one of our humble ways of giving back to the communities that support our business and where football enjoys unprecedented support.”

Rowles added that their next destinations in their rollout of the ‘coaching the coaches’ programme will be Soweto and Springs and these initiatives will include teams that feature ogogo (elderly women) who not only enjoy the sport but also want to keep fit and ward off some illnesses associated with the lack of an active lifestyle.

“Alex and other areas not mentioned so far will also fall in place as we continue with the project.”

He concluded that he was not at liberty to disclose how much the investment was in the project but wherever they went they handed out balls, nets, whistles and other soccer training equipment.
