City of Johannesburg urges Alex residents to report illegal construction and land invasions

ALEXANDRA – The City urged residents to report the all illegal construction to City officials.

The City of Johannesburg in Region E said it is extremely concerned with a number of land invasion and the mushrooming of illegal construction of buildings under high voltage power lines, especially in Alexandra and Tsutsumani.

Speaking on the sidelines of an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) session held in East Bank Community Hall, Region E Director Liziwe Ntshinga-Makoro said the two were among the challenges the region was facing.

“There was an acknowledgement from community members of the work we do on the ground but you could see that people want us to do more. The illegal construction work that is taking place in Alexandra where people are constructing houses under the electricity power lines and a number of land invasions is a recipe for disaster waiting to happen,” Ntshinga-Makoro said.

Ntshinga-Makoro urged community members to report illegal construction and illegal connection of electricity to the City. “It becomes easy for the City to stop illegality at an early stage, unlike the cases where we learn about it when people have completed building and they already live there. When these illegalities are reported earlier we are able as the City to stop them from continuing building.”
