Full waste refuse removal services meant to resume yesterday, but rubbish still uncollected in many northern suburb areas
JOBURG – However, Pikitup announced on Twitter which depots would be servicing the various areas throughout Joburg's northern suburbs today.
While MMC for the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, Nico de Jager, announced in a media statement on Tuesday that the normal functioning of waste management entity would resume by yesterday morning, 4 October, the rubbish was still piled up on pavements in many northern suburb neighbourhoods this morning.
Paulshof, Lonehill and Riviera are just three of the many areas where rubbish is yet to be collected this week, according to our readers in Joburg’s northern suburbs.
On Friday morning, Pikitup tweeted the depots where it would be operational and the areas that should be serviced on Friday. They included:
Pikitup's Norwood depot will implement waste removal services in the following areas Bruma,Cyrildene,Observatory1&2 and the afternoon shift will conduct services in Kensignton1&2 Bezvalley and Troyeville @NicoDeJager64 @CityofJoburgZA @HermanMashaba

Selby depot will be rendering waste removal services in the following areas JHB CBD, and Joubert Park. The afternoon shift will render services in Hillbrow, Braamfontein, Fordsburg and Mayfair @NicoDeJager64 @HermanMashaba @CityofJoburgZA

De Jager had explained on Tuesday that Pikitup would be operating with limited capacity throughout Johannesburg due to the failure to manage the transition of the ad hoc fleet contracts in Pikitup. “The ad hoc fleet contract serves to provide additional vehicles to the City to compensate for the attrition of Pikitup’s aged fleet. In order to ensure that service delivery suffers minimal interruption, this morning, the City held a meeting with senior Pikitup management in order to put into place a plan that will mitigate the level of disruption to our residents,” said De Jager.
“In the interim, Pikitup, through maximising its existing fleet and operating additional overtime shifts, will ensure that the maximum level of refuse removal rounds are achieved under the circumstances. Historically, the City has struggled with the timely management of contracts so as to ensure a smooth transition between the end of one contract and the commencement of another. This situation has been exacerbated by the advanced age and volatility of our existing fleet.
“This is a set of circumstances which have recently been condemned by the Mayor. As such, I have requested a full investigation be instituted to determine the culpability of those responsible.
“We cannot tolerate a situation where service delivery to our residents is compromised. I will ensure that Pikitup is issuing communication from our respective Regional Depots advising residents of the progress towards full operation on Thursday.”
He further apologised to residents for the inconvenience.
Pikitup has also advised residents to make use of the gardensites in the city to dispose of waste.
