Urban Movers Pantsula Dancers take Pantsula dance to the next level

ALEXANDRA – The Pantsula group has won major competitions, working contracts and partnerships with big corporations in the country.

Pantsula dance is commonly known as a traditional township dance and mostly used as entertainment instrument amongst township youngsters. However, for the Alexandra based youth dance group, Urban Movers Pantsula Dancers this dance is a career and a way of generating income to put the bread on the table.

Urban Movers Pantsula Dancers is a Pantsula group with 11 members that was established last year Thabang Ramphisa (21), Milton Tshabalala (20), Doctor Mabunda (23) and Aphelele Ngqulunga (20) who wanted to have something that would keep them away from bad company and substance abuse. The four were later joined by the seven other youngsters who went through auditions to become members of the group.

According to Ramphisa, the group has proved to be one of the best Pantsula groups in the country since its inception and has won major competitions, working contracts and partnerships with big corporations in the country.

“Before we formed this group we [the four founding members] were part of a group called Via Vyndals which is a well-known Pantsula group in Alexandra. The four of us then decided to form our thing. We [Urban Movers] were the first group to win R20 000 in the Stumbo Stomp Amapantsula competition which plays on SABC 1 on Saturday evenings,” he said.

Ramphisa said his group has also been featured in a television commercial of Telkom and Centurion Volkswagen to promote its newly released car models in different shopping malls around South Africa. “We’ve worked with a number of big companies in the country to promote their products and have also been featured in some of the music videos for artist like Cassper Nyovest, Vusi Nova, Zahara, and many other big names in the music industry.”
