Man gets suspended sentence for assault

ALEXANDRA – Man on assault charge escapes with suspended sentence.

 

An Alex man found guilty of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm was lucky to get away with a suspended sentence.

Thabo Jungqe (29) was sentenced by Magistrate Renier Boshoff to two years wholly suspended for five years for the offence which was perpetrated at about 9.30pm on 21 July in Setswetla Informal Settlement. He attacked and injured the victim who had to be treated at a clinic for his injuries.

The two were at the same tavern when the victim went to the toilet. When he came out the accused was waiting outside the toilet and without uttering a word, hit him on the head with a beer bottle causing him to bleed. He then drew out a knife and tried to stab the victim who managed to grab hold of the accused’s hand in which he was holding the weapon. The accused managed to cut two of the victim’s fingers.

In mitigation, the accused claimed to have acted in revenge after the victim had reported him to the police for an earlier fight.
