Dismissed man steals from former employer

ALEXANDRA – Former worker sentenced for burglary over termination pay.

An Alex man was sentenced to spend five years in jail by Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for burglary and theft at his former employers’ business.

Mawande Nkunzi (29) admitted committing the offence after he was fired. He gained entry into the Woodmead premises by cutting the roof at midnight on 20 May. He was identified through CCTV footage being alone inside the premises tampering with a safe and taking R30 000 in cash. The burglary was discovered the following morning by his former co-workers reporting for duty.

In mitigation, Nkunzi claimed that he stole the money after he was given only R11 000 from R28 000 he was entitled to when he was dismissed.
