The night of glitz and glamour was held at the church on the corner of Selbourne and 4th avenues on 16 June.

In his opening speech, leader of the church, Reverend Nicholas Mashiyane asked congregants to hold a moment of silence in honour of the 1976 youth who sacrificed their lives for the realisation of today’s democracy.

The church’s youth coordinator Busisiwe Skosane said, “As we commemorate Youth Day June 16, we as the youth of Alexandra United Reformed Church felt and saw the need to honour those elders who give more than what is expected of them in helping the church do its work. Most of these individuals were part of June 16, Soweto uprising which led to today’s democracy.”

The Alexandra Harmonious Choir and Legae La Alex and Encore music groups kept congregants dancing with their soul healing music performances during the ceremony.
