Nkosingamandla Malembe who was remanded in custody by Magistrate Renier Boshoff assisted by state prosecutor Lufuno Maphiri, is charged with stabbing the victim to death on 13 January at Madala Hostel after he had found him talking to the accused’s girlfriend. The delay in the case is partly a result of changing of his legal representative by the Legal Aid South Africa before any plea was made and the Directorate of Public Prosecution’s determination of where the case was to be heard.

Stating the charge, the prosecutor said the victim proposed to the woman late afternoon on the day but she refused and warned him that the accused didn’t like men talking to her. When he persisted, she told him to leave her alone and that he was also too young for her. Malembe seemingly appeared and asked what they were talking about and told them not to make a fool of him.

He produced a knife and stabbed the victim several times. As he fell, the woman, who was sobbing, steadied him to the ground as the accused walked away. When she followed to tell him that the victim was dead, Malembe told her that it was because of her mischief and that she should mourn her dead boyfriend alone.

He was arrested a day after the incident. The court also heard that the accused beat the woman whenever he found her talking to any man including her male relatives.
