Mbopha murder trial postponed

ALEX – The case against the man accused of killing Alex businessman, Mbopha Mashigo postponed to July in order to allow the state to complete investigations.

 

The case against the man accused of killing prominent Alexandra businessman, Mbopha Mashigo, has been postponed to 24 July for further investigations.

The state is alleging that Jonas Ramokgolais shot and killed Mashigo on New Year’s day at his business premises in Alexandra.

Addressing the magistrate in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, state prosecutor Keshini Reddy said they were still busy with investigations. She said the only outstanding things were the downloading of cell phone records and the forensic ballistic report.

Magistrate Syta Prinsloo granted the postponement.

The accused was arrested following a tip-off from a community member after his photos were released as a wanted suspect in the murder of the businessman.

The accused was denied bail and has been in custody since his arrest.

The Alex community attended the case in numbers and the courtroom was packed to capacity with some people having to stand outside. Community members have vowed to follow the case until the end. “We would like to see justice done. What that boy did was a very terrible thing,” said Themba Nkosi who was there to support the Mbopha family.

Nkosi said the deceased was a very good person who always assisted those in need. Outside the court, there were other community members who staged a picket.
