Vet’s case postponed

ALEXANDRA – Bogus vet's bail extended to 3 May.

A warrant of arrest against a bogus vet, 66-year-old Anthony Balomenos for missing a scheduled hearing while on bail for attempted murder and causing grievous bodily, was suspended by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court after he turned up in court.

This after he appeared in court with a sick note and the case was postponed to 3 May with his bail extended.

Balomenos is charged with attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm to his 68-year-old ex-friend, Dawie van Staden, against who he laid a counter charge for intimidation. In the case reported in Alex News, Fake veterinarian surgeon on the run in Week ending 23 March, Balomenos was also said to have had brushes with the law in 2011 and was convicted in 2015 for posing and unlawfully working as a vet.

In issuing the warrant, the court took into account the accused’s defaulting and changing of legal representatives resulting in the postponement of some hearings.

It is alleged that Balomenos deliberately bumped into Van Staden with his vehicle, breaking his one leg and lacerating the other before driving away on 17 April last year in Woodmead. Witnesses called an ambulance which took the victim to a hospital for treatment.

This occurred after their relationship soured a month earlier following the death from an alleged botched operation by Balomenos on Van Staden’s dog which earned him money from an advert for a motor vehicle company.

On the day, they met in separate vehicles at a robot where, after Balomenos allegedly threatened to kill Van Staden, they agreed to park on the side of the road to sort out their differences. Balomenos, who followed from behind, allegedly bumped into Van Staden, inflicting the injuries.

Van Staden told Alex News that the injuries were costly and kept him in hospital for a long time. He hasn’t fully healed and will require grafting which will likely leave him partially deformed for life.

Ironically, Balomenos laid this counter-charge of intimidation when he was arrested on 5 May last year.
