Church burgled, items stolen

ALEXANDRA – Alex police investigate a range of crimes.

Alex Police Station attended to 65 criminal offences and arrested 44 suspects between 2 and 9 April including for rape, burglary, housebreaking, hijacking and murder.

An alleged rape of a woman occurred at about 2.45am on 2 April by a taxi driver in a Toyota Avanza. He picked her up while she was walking home, promised to drop her at her place but instead stopped at the corner of 12th and Sam Buti avenues where he threatened her, covered her face with a cloth and took her through an alley and into a back room where he allegedly raped her using a condom. He also allegedly took her cell phone and R500 in cash before letting her go.

A burglary occurred at Universal Church on 13th Avenue on 3 April. “Police patrolling the area found one of the doors into the church wide open at 5.30am. On inspection, church authorities called to the scene found a projector, speakers and other items all worth R88 000 missing,” police spokesperson Stephen Malatji said.

Earlier the same morning, a woman was a victim of a housebreaking. She apparently went to bed the previous night having closed and secured the windows and doors of her home but was awoken by a breeze. On inspection, she found the wooden and steel burglar doors had been broken and were wide open. Her computer, DVDs and CDs all worth about R11 000 were missing.

Malatji added that towards midnight on 6 April, a victim who operates a transport hire business was allegedly hijacked and kidnapped by four suspects. The men called the victim and asked to be transported from the corner of 4th and Sam Buti avenues to an unspecified destination. As he drove into Vincent Tshabalala Road after picking them up, one of them pointed a gun at him and ordered him to get into the back seat of his VW Polo worth about R80 000. They drove to Lombardy East where they tied him to a lamp post before driving away in his vehicle with its registration documents inside. They also took R1 000 and a cell phone from him.

Malatji said all four cases were under investigation. A case of murder resulted in an arrest.
