ALEXANDRA – Gun owner and Woodmead theft suspect in hot water.

Alex Magistrates’ Court is hearing a case in which both accused and victim are alleged transgressors.

The case stemming from last year August involves the alleged theft of a firearm. The accused appeared in court on 27 January and was remanded in custody pending further investigation.The firearm owner appeared earlier in the month, remanded out of custody pending the conclusion of the theft accused’s case.

The 35-year-old owner went to Woodmead Shopping Centre in August with his wife and left their vehicle at a car wash to be cleaned by an attendant. He claimed to have taken out some items but left the firearm underneath a seat. On their return, they checked for the firearm underneath the seat and other parts of the vehicle but couldn’t find it.

When they asked the attendant, he declined taking it. The couple seemingly drove away but returned and approached the car wash owner. CCTV camera footage at the place was viewed and showed the attendant allegedly removing the gun from under the seat and hiding it somewhere behind a building.

The attendant was called to the office and police were called and he was arrested for theft and illegal possession of the firearm.

The victim was also quizzed and charged with negligent possession of the firearm which should at all times be in one’s possession or in a safe.
