No major robberies in festive season

ALEXANDRA – Murder, rape, assaults blot relative festive peace.

 

Alex residents were commended for the general peace and quiet that prevailed during the festive week between 25 December and 31 December.

Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said most nights were calm while a large percentage of the population was away for the holiday, leaving a small group of residents to enjoy their temporary peace and rare family reunions.

“The calmness was aided by high visibility of the police as well as community police forum patrollers who ensured that there were no serious incidents, particularly business and mall robberies,” Kodisang said.

Despite this, the police received 16 reports of serious crimes and 43 other crime reports which included 27 assaults. A total of 22 suspects were arrested.

Serious crime reports were: (The arrests for serious crimes included):

Two for murder

Four for rape

Three for residential burglary

Two for business burglary

Two for business robbery

Three for robbery with a firearm.

Other crime reports were:

Three for attempted murder

Nine for assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm

Eighteen for common assault

Four for common robbery

Three for theft from a motor vehicle

Five for malicious damage to property

One for general theft.

Four for assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm

One for business robbery

One for common robbery

Two for shoplifting

One for possession of suspected stolen property

One for malicious damage to property

One for possession of unlicensed firearm.
