Two life sentences handed down to man for rape and murder of girlfriend

JOBURG – A 30-year-old man was sentenced to two life sentences for the rape and murder of his girlfriend in 2014.

Two life sentences were handed down to a 30-year-old man by Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

Nkululeko Siyathemba Monwabisi Ngcekwa was sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of his then girlfriend, Zamabuya Nondala Ngwenya.

According to the spokesperson for Johannesburg Central police, Captain Xoli Mbele, the murder and rape occurred on 4 January 2014. Mbele explained that police received information of a murder at a flat in Johannesburg CBD on the corner of Jeppe and Kruis streets.

“When police arrived on the scene, they found a 27-year old female, Zamabuya Nondalo Ngwenya, lying on the bed half naked,” Mbele said.

“The deceased also had bruises on her neck and swollen eyes.”

Upon further investigation, police found out that the deceased had an argument with her boyfriend the previous night and that the accused had strangled and raped her.

“Paramedics certified the deceased dead on the scene. The suspect (accused) was on the run until he handed himself over to the police through the assistance of his lawyer on 7 January 2014.”

According to the spokesperson, the secured conviction is the result of diligent work performed by the investigating officer.

Police are appealing to the community not to keep quiet when they witness domestic violence between partners. “Silence is no longer golden. Inform the police when your neighbours are fighting and ask to remain anonymous if need be. Working together, the police and the community can subdue the loss of innocent lives.”
