Aerobics fundraising event a success

ALEXANDRA - A fundraising event was held for street aerobics instructors.

Body Boost Groom Fitness Agency held a fundraising aerobics session at 3 Square Grounds for their instructors who have been working tirelessly to make sure that residents of Alexandra stay fit and healthy throughout the year.

The agency is part of the City of Johannesburg’s street aerobics fitness campaign with sessions held at various locations in the township every second Saturday morning.

Catherine Kekana, CEO of the agency, said this was a way of thanking the instructors for taking time off their Saturdays to give back to the community.

“They are not paid anything throughout the year, so all proceeds will be shared among them as a way of thanking them for their hard work and dedication towards keeping residents fit,” Kekana said.

About 40 people signed up for the fundraising event and had to pay R10 to participate. They received healthy snacks to make sure that they all had the energy they needed for the session.

The event was different from those held fortnightly with more intense routines introduced.

“With the street aerobics, we try to make them as comfortable as possible without taking away the aim to keep fit.”

Gordon Bokaba, head instructor, said it was important for one to exercise because it kept one fit and slowed down the ageing process.

“Exercising improves your life and decreases chances of getting diseases like stroke and heart attacks,” Bokaba said.

The final street aerobics session for the year was held at Alex Mall on 9 December.
