Baroka goalie puts himself and club on the map

JOBURG – Baroka FC goalie makes history and South Africa proud.

Oscarine Masuluke, the Baroka FC goalie, may not have bagged the coveted Fifa Puskas Award in London but he has certainly put South African football and more importantly himself and his club on the map.

Not enough South Africans and football lovers the world over voted for Masuluke’s goal and he was pipped to the award by Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud for his ‘scorpion kick’ goal against Crystal Palace.

But Masuluke can take consolation in that the world’s best footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid, and Tottenham Spurs striker Harry Kane had backed him to win the award.

“I may not have won the award but one thing for sure is that the world has stood up and noticed our South African talent and the skills we possess,” he said at OR Tambo International Airport on his return from London. “My nomination has not only put me on the map but it has done the same for South African football and my club, Baroka.”

“We’re a young club that has made significant [progress] in such a short space of time and we hope to do more as we go forward.”

Masuluke also failed to muster enough votes at home for the #PSLAwards 2017 best goal in the vehemently partisan football scene despite his amazing strike seconds before the full-time whistle against Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership match.
